Imagine a childhood brimming with impromptu concerts where the lively notes of a piano resonated through the family home. Picture small hands eagerly grasping crayons, bringing imaginary worlds to life on paper. This nurturing environment cultivated in Jannie a profound appreciation for beauty in its many forms, a sensibility that would weave itself through the very fabric of her life.
In May 1963, a new chapter unfolded as Jannie embarked on a lifelong partnership with Paul Wittmann. Leaving the familiar comfort of her childhood home, she journeyed to Meise, where she would build a family and a life filled with shared dreams and enduring love. Together, Jannie and Paul welcomed three sons into the world, each a testament to their bond. And among these cherished sons is my husband, Arnaud, the youngest, through whom I have been fortunate enough to know the extraordinary woman that is his mother.
Initially involved in accounting, Jannie’s innate curiosity and sharp intellect quickly led her to explore new avenues. With characteristic diligence, she dedicated herself to learning the intricacies of marketing and event planning, eventually embracing these responsibilities with grace and talent. This period highlighted her adaptability and willingness to embrace new challenges, qualities that have always defined her spirit.
It was through her beloved husband, Paul, that Jannie’s appreciation for the world of art truly blossomed. He gently guided her through the hallowed halls of galleries, opening her eyes to the captivating narratives held within each brushstroke and sculpture. He encouraged her to venture beyond familiar horizons, accompanying the Palais des Beaux-Arts on trips that unveiled the diverse artistic landscapes of the world. These experiences ignited a spark within her, and slowly but surely, Jannie began to cultivate her own discerning taste, a personal connection to the power and beauty of artistic expression.
This burgeoning passion for art found a unique and tangible outlet in 1992 when Jannie joined the Belgian Patchwork Association ASBL. There, her innate creativity, keen eye for color, and inherent talent for sewing converged in a truly remarkable way. With nimble fingers and an artist's heart, she began transforming scraps of fabric into breathtaking and utterly original quilts. These were not mere blankets; they were intricate stories told in texture and hue, each stitch a testament to her patience and passion. I myself am a devoted admirer of her creations and feel incredibly fortunate to own a few of these textile masterpieces. There is a unique comfort in snuggling under a quilt crafted by Jannie's loving hands, a warmth that goes beyond the physical and touches the soul.
Her life experiences have gifted her a wealth of perspectives, and she possesses a remarkable ability to weave engaging anecdotes that bring the past to life. Conversations with her are like opening a treasure chest, each story a precious gem waiting to be discovered.
On this special day dedicated to mothers, I want to express my deepest gratitude to Jannie. Thank you for the love you have shown me, for the warmth of your welcome into your family, and for the inspiring example you set as a strong, creative, and independent woman. Thank you for the beautiful quilts that grace my home and warm my nights. Thank you for the stories and the laughter, for the shared moments and the unwavering support.
